More than half of UK struggles to get to sleep night after night

52% of nation lays awake for longer than health guidelines recommend and younger people are most affected

Abingdon, 09 September 2020 - People aren’t getting to sleep as quickly as they should be and this could mean they’re in poor health according to new research from Cambridge Sleep Sciences.

The research, which was conducted by Vitreous World on 2,000 UK consumers aged 18+, found that over half (52%) of people take longer than 20 minutes to get to sleep, while a third take between 20-45 minutes. Nearly a fifth (19%) take over 45 minutes.

Ten to 20 minutes is the normal amount of time it should take to fall asleep according to national body for sleep health The Sleep Council1. It also states that the time it takes us to drop off to sleep at night is a key indicator of our sleep health according to research carried out with Northumbria University in 20182.

Cambridge Sleep Sciences’ research finds that younger people take longer to get to sleep than older people: 60% of people under 45 take more than 20 minutes to get to sleep compared to 44% of people over 45.

Worryingly, younger people are also more affected by lack of sleep. Asked if lack of sleep had caused them to do a number of things including making bad decisions, calling in sick or having mental health issues, 77% of people under 45 answered yes compared to just 23% of those aged over 45.

“It’s interesting that older people do not seem to experience the same impacts from lack of sleep or poor quality sleep as today’s young people,” says Dr Julian Stone, CEO, Cambridge Sleep Sciences. “This suggests that younger people have either started suffering from poorer sleep, or they have begun to find it harder to cope with tiredness. Lack of good quality sleep can impact physical and mental health, as well as productivity.”

To help people get to sleep and improve their quality of sleep, Cambridge Sleep Sciences has launched SleepHub™, a science-powered product that uses beats and pulses to re-train the brain to revert to natural sleep cycles. The product, which comes with a 60-day moneyback guarantee, offers four customisable sleep modes to help improve quality of life for those suffering from sleeplessness and sleep-related issues. A variety of soundscapes complement each mode, enabling the brain to relax and find its natural sleep pattern. The modes include:

  • Deep Sleep: An eight-hour sleep programme including an 18 minute wake up cycle and alarm.
  • Easy Sleep: A customised sleep programme for those who have a set amount of time to sleep. This setting automatically adjusts the Deep Sleep programme to deliver the optimum sleep pattern depending on how users have between going to bed and waking up.
  • Fall Asleep: A two-hour sleep programme to guide users into a deep sleep with optional wake-up alarm.
  • Power Nap: Guides users into an energising nap with optional wake-up alarm. You can choose from 30, 45 and 60 minute sleep programmes.

The result of over a decade of research and development, SleepHub™ comprises of an intuitive touch-screen control on a 7-inch display, paired with two full range 3-inch 20-watt premium speakers with aluminium cone drivers delivering deep, rich sound quality.

Users can also connect audio devices via Bluetooth to enjoy music in superior sound quality, while Wi-Fi connectivity and quick start functionality enables simple plug and play.

The product is available in a choice of bold black or clean white matte finishes and features an intuitive interface powered by a custom Android 7.1.2 operating system.

“With increasingly demanding lifestyles and everyday worries, the brain can gradually fall out of sync with natural sleep cycles. By understanding the science behind a good night’s sleep, we have been able to develop a product that helps the brain return to those natural sleep cycles and improves health and wellbeing,” concludes Stone.

Cambridge Sleep Sciences aims to improve health and wellbeing through the power of natural sleep. SleepHub™ is the company’s first product and is now available for pre-order from SleepHub.com
